The defendant has become the plaintiff today. Yes, Sean Diddy Combs who is awaiting trial for charges of racketeering and sex trafficking is suing streaming service Peacock. He is suing NBCUniversal and Peacock for $100 million in a defamation lawsuit. The streaming service is the creator of the recent documentary Diddy: The Making Of A Bad Boy. The documentary premiered in January 2025 and details his rise and fall and the allegations against him.

The 55-year-old was arrested in New York in September 2024 on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Allegations say that at his parties, which were known as ‘Freak Offs’ he would give illicit substances to sex workers and record explicit activities without their consent.

A series of lawsuits led to his indictment, including one from his ex-girlfriend and singer Cassie Ventura, who accused him of rape, physical abuse, and sex trafficking. Ventura and the rapper settled their lawsuit in November 2023. This isn’t the only high-profile lawsuit filed by a celebrity this year, in December 2024 actress Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against her co-star Justin Baldoni and accused him of sexual harassment among other things.

The rapper has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him but is now suing the documentary makers for defamation in his lawsuit. Find out what’s behind the lawsuit and all the details here.

What does the lawsuit say?

Diddy has filed a lawsuit against NBCUniversal, Peacock TV, and Ample Entertainment on the grounds of defamation. The defamation element relates to statements made about him in the documentary.

According to Variety, the lawsuit says that the companies involved are “falsely, recklessly, and maliciously” accusing Combs of multiple murders and sex trafficking. The claims specifically refer to  Al B. Sure, Rodney Jones, and attorney Ariel Mitchell, who is a lawyer for one of Diddy’s accusers.

What does Diddy’s documentary cover?

Among the allegations laid out against him, the documentary looks at other allegations including murder. He was previously accused of killing his long-term ex-girlfriend Kimberly Porter, who died of lobar pneumonia in 2018. Additionally, he was accused of orchestrating the death of East Coast rapper The Notorious B.I.G in 1997, who was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. He was previously signed to Bad Boy Records, a label founded by Diddy in 1993.

And yes, there are more than two murder allegations.

What did Diddy’s legal team say?

Diddy’s attorney Erica Wolff made a statement and confirmed the lawsuit. In the statement, she claims the media “made a conscious decision to line their own pockets at the expense of truth, decency, and basic standards of professional journalism.”

She could be referring to the coverage of Diddy’s allegations and his subsequent arrest.

In the documentary, Wolff says Diddy was accused without evidence. She continued, ” In the purported documentary, Defendants accuse Mr. Combs of horrible crimes, including serial murder and sexual assault of minors – knowing that there is no evidence to support them. In making and broadcasting these falsehoods, among others, Defendants seek only to capitalize on the public’s appetite for scandal without any regard for the truth and at the expense of Mr. Combs’s right to a fair trial”.

The trial of the rapper doesn’t begin until May 5.

Why the lawsuit?

Diddy’s attorney says the reason for the lawsuit is to hold people accountable for the accusations made against him. It is easy to assume this is directed at those who appeared in the documentary.

The damages that the rapper is seeking were laid out by his lawyer. From the media companies and those named, he seeks $100 million. Primarily, Diddy is seeking damages for “severe reputational and economic harm” caused by statements he claims are not true.

How did the internet react to Diddy’s lawsuit?

As with all Diddy discourse, the internet had lots to say. Many users laughed at him suing, given the active lawsuit and allegations against him. One user on X wrote: “Defamation??,” and heckled the idea of his lawsuit. It is ironic if you think about it…

Another brutally wrote: “May he rot in his jail cell.” Ouch.

Another called the lawsuit “premature” since he is awaiting trial for a myriad of allegations.

Meanwhile, another user was indifferent to the whole thing and declared both sides should “fight” it out in court.

Support for Diddy to fight back

On the other side, some people supported the rapper’s right to fight back against the documentary makers. A fan account for him said: “As he should…Because THE LIES have to stop!! #FreeDiddy #FreePuff #FreeSeanCombs”

Others welcomed the idea of a lawsuit against the documentary makers. One user wrote: “Diddy’s claims could have serious implications for the documentary. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds in court!”

X users are also curious about how the lawsuit would play out since Diddy is awaiting trial.

Another user said: “Good. I am tired of MSM doing hit pieces on people without consequences. Time for atonement.” By MSM, the user was referring to the mainstream media.

Since the allegations and Diddy’s arrest happened in the fall of 2024, he has constantly been in the news cycle.

The lawsuit news has just broken, so updates on the suit are pending.
