While Frozen Empire may have performed disappointingly at the box office, it appears that it hasn’t chilled the director’s enthusiasm for more Ghostbusters films.

More to come

While Frozen Empire had something of a frosty reception from critics and theater goers when it was released earlier this year, the team behind it have teased that there may be more films to come in the franchise.

Gil Kenan, who wrote and directed Frozen Empire, told The Direct that “we definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen.”

He added that he and Jason Reitman – co-writer of Frozen Empire and son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies in the 1980s – “take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of Ghostbusters very seriously.”

Kenan also said, “there’ll be more about that later”.  This hints that there are talks in the background, but they are not yet at the stage where they can be talked about.

Animated show to come

Frozen Empire, which starred McKenna Grace and Paul Rudd, did take more than $200 million globally despite the critical indifference. This was enough to place it in the top 10 highest grossing films of the year in June, although it will have tumbled down the list somewhat now.

But when a film may arrive is unclear. Kenan and Reitman are currently involved in the development of a new animated Ghostbusters series for Netflix. It is thought this series will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films, but that has yet to be confirmed. Also has yet to be confirmed is when that series may drop.
