Could it be, a third Downton Abbey movie? Well, yes, it is! Downton Abbey 3 will release this year. Downtown Abbey: A New Era, the film before number three was released in April 2022. The movie is based on the hit UK TV series which followed an upper class family and their life and conflicts at their country estate, Downton Abbey. The show ran on the ITV network from 2010 and concluded in 2015. The series starred the late Maggie Smith, who sadly died in September 2024.

Naturally the series’ popularity in the UK and USA are unsurprising. Who doesn’t love a British period drama, or an early 20th century drama? Downton Abbey even went international back in the day, being broadcast on PBS. Since it finished in 2015, there have been three movies. The first with the same title was released in 2019, A New Era in 2022, and Downton Abbey 3 in 2025. They seem to be really keen on that three-year gap, don’t they? The first film made $194 million at the box office, and a New Era made $92 million, making them a smash success.

The only trailer for Downton Abbey 3 is the announcement promo. Right now there is no official trailer released. However, when it does land, we will update you ASAP.
What is the plot of Downton Abbey 3?
Plot details about the third movie are few and far between unfortunately. What we do know is that Downton Abbey 3 is the sequel to A New Era, so presumably the plot will follow the events of that film. A New Era had two big plot points, a dreamy South of France setting and the shooting of a silent movie at Downton.
The movie heavily featured the Crawleys and since Smith’s sad death, the movie will undoubtably pay tribute to her character Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess. The tributes from Downton Abbey poured in when Smith died, so maybe a portion of Downton Abbey 3 will address this in a plot line. A New Era seemingly already rounded out the Dowager Countess’ character arc (no spoilers, but you know if you’ve seen it), so maybe this isn’t necessary.
