  • Ed Sheeran watched Ipswich Town draw 1-1 with Manchester United in Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge of the Red Devils
  • Sheeran gatecrashed Amorim’s post-match interview with Sky Sports
  • Viewers were left furious with Sheeran and Sky Sports for the interruption

Ed Sheeran may have been in celebratory mood after his beloved Ipswich Town secured a 1-1 draw with Manchester United, this afternoon, but the singer-songwriter has run afoul of football fans on social media after gatecrashing Ruben Amorim’s first post-match interview as Red Devils’ head coach.

Sheeran, who is both an investor in the Tractor Boys (he has sponsored their kits since 2021) and a lifelong fan, watched on at Portman Road as Omari Hutchinson cancelled out Marcus Rashford’s early opener to dampen Amorim’s dream start at United.

And, while Ipswich didn’t manage to go onto win the game, thanks in no small part to some goalkeeping heroics from Andre Onana in the United goal, Sheeran was still in jubilant mood after the match, turning up as Sky Sports interviewed Amorim about his first game in charge.

It was a moment clearly intended to get people talking, but probably not in the way that it ended up being received, with fans voicing their displeasure both at Sheeran’s conduct and at Sky Sports for allowing it to happen in the first place.

The game itself was not one that will likely ever inspire any works from Ed Sheeran in the future, although Ruben Amorim and every Manchester United fan watching the game could probably quite happily pen a love letter to Andre Onana for his Peter Schmeichel-esque heroics, that salvaged the Red Devils a draw that could have very easily been yet another defeat in a miserable campaign.
