Among those pictures was a selfie with his longtime friend Taylor Swift and a backstage shot of him at the 2015 billboard awards looking “dribbly drunk”.
The account is named @teddysoldphone and Sheeran has slowly been building a following since posting his first image on 28 March.
His first photo upload shows the singer looking fresh-faced and youthful, pointing a hairdryer at the camera with the caption “just jack tour 2009.
Ed Sheeran went into a time capsule
The four-time Grammy winning singer publicly unveiled the Instagram account yesterday (29 April) on the eve of his new song being released.
He described the experience of switching on his old phone as “like a time capsule”. He had only done it to help lawyers find evidence for a copyright case. Instead, he found a camera roll full of photos that instantly brought memories flooding back, some of them moving him to tears.
The first thing he came across was an old text message from his friend Jamal Edwards, who passed away in 2022, followed by messages from an ex-girlfriend and family members he hadn’t spoken to in years.
Sheeran revealed in a collab post with his current Instagram account that “Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, who I won’t get to speak to again. I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we’ve lost touch since. The whole experience was such an emotional journey”.
Archive snaps
Sheeran has shared over 200 photos found on his phone to his secondary Instagram account.
A selfie with Swift is captioned “always pulled a face in a selfie, this pic was no different”, with Sheeran looking bemused.
Another shows him alongside Harry Styles at the Olympics closing ceremony. The caption explains he chose to get a kebab instead of partying at George Michael’s house afterwards, adding “live and learn”.
A screenshot upload shows text messages between him and wife Cherry Seaborn, which he calls “encore texting cherry in our honeymoon stage”.
Another screenshot post, this time of an email from his Dad, shows how proud he was of his son after he performed live with Stevie Wonder.
Sheeran also uploaded a screenshot of a note that he wrote when he first decided to ditch his phone in 2015. He captioned the post “my last post before ditching my phone, and this is where it ends”.
