The Emmy award-winner has joined Dexter: Resurrection in what will be a “high-profile guest arc”. He will play Al a man with a “Midwestern background” and a supposed serial killer. Fans online had lots to say about the casting and used Modern Family memes to express their feelings. Stonestreet rose to fame playing Cameron Tucker on the ABC sitcom. He played the role for 11 seasons and was in every episode!

But now Stonestreet is taking on a new challenge, and we couldn’t be happier to see him in a new role. Here is why his casting is perfect for Dexter: Resurrection.

Why is Eric Stonestreet perfect for Dexter: Resurrection?

There are many reasons why Stonestreet is a perfect addition to the Dexter: Resurrection cast.

1. It is unexpected

Of all the crossovers we have seen with actors on Dexter, this one is one of the most unexpected. Since Stonestreet played Cam, a flamboyant and animated stay-at-home dad, this role is the complete opposite of him. When you star in a popular sitcom, especially an American one, you will likely be typecast in similar roles. Jennifer Anniston, for example, was typecast in various Rachel Green-type roles after Friends ended.

By doing this, Stonestreet is shedding the image of Cam and moving onto something different, which is refreshing and will be interesting for fans to witness on-screen.

2. Eric Stonestreet has played a character involved in crimes before

On his acting resume, Stonestreet has experience playing someone affiliated with crime and murders. Therefore, he will know how to bring that darkness and type of character to life. On CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Stonestreet played Ronnie Litre for thirteen episodes. He played the character back in the 2000s.

Litre was a Questionable Documents Technician who assisted the CSI team with document analysis. His character leaned into that quirky and humorous thing that Cam also had going on, but at least his experience playing someone involved in crime could be useful in Dexter: Resurrection.

3. His role in The Loft

The Dexter universe is filled with male serial killers, particularly those who like to kill women. The Ice Truck Killer, a.ka Dexter’s brother Brian Moser targets women. We later find out a foster care worker separated Dexter from his brother at a young age, which essentially drives his hatred of women. So that’s why there is always room in Dexter for another serial killer, and Stonestreet may be able to pull that off.

In 2014 Stonestreet took on one of his darker roles as Marty Landry in The Loft. The Loft is about five men whose friendship starts to dwindle when the dead body of a woman is found in an apartment. Death in an apartment right? Very original. Except when this woman’s body is found the men suspect each other killed her because they used to have their extramarital affairs in that specific apartment.

Although he is not the killer in this film, the fact he has had such a role suggests that Stonestreet could competently play a serial killer, or even a lecherer like his character is described in this film. His character is an obvious cheater and has the motivation to want to cover up a murder.

To conclude, Stonestreet has the emotional range and dramatic ability to take on such a role, especially in a transformative serial killer arc. He will be able to get audiences to understand why his character is the way he is, which isn’t always the case for serial killers in Dexter!

Duality in the performance

Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter is all about duality. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is a blood spatter analyst and a serial killer by night. He lives a Hannah Montana lifestyle! Stonestreet’s skills could be useful here because he can play characters with duality.

The Modern Family star’s comedic timing and delivery will be used to add humor to the darkness of his character, but his dramatic ability can be used to bring darkness. Starring in Dexter: Resurrection, it is likely he will have to bring duality to the character and those skills to the role, making him a perfect cast addition to the show.
