Sarah Michelle Gellar had Buffy fans’ hearts beating in February 2025 when she confirmed the Buffy reboot. In a statement on Instagram, she confirmed the announcement that was made by Deadline and Variety on February 3. Gellar confirmed that she was involved and promised fans that she and the team would get the reboot “right”.

Buffy was a cult classic in the nineties and starred Gellar as the badass vampire slayer Buffy Summers, who protects her town from vamps and demons by night and goes to school by day. The show ran on the WB network from 1997 until 2003.

Buffy’s success and reboot hesitation

Thanks to the success of Buffy, a spin-off, Angel, was made in 1999 which starred Angel (David Boreanaz) and Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter). On Buffy returning, Gellar was asked many times since the show ended 22 years ago. Each time she has been hesitant to bring the show back. Additionally, the return seemed less likely with the cancelation of Joss Whedon, the show’s creator.

In 2021 Justice League star Ray Fisher came out and accused Whedon of ‘unprofessional behavior’. Slowly more allegations arose, including from Buffy’s own Carpenter, who said Whedon created a “hostile and toxic work environment”. Buffy cast members stood by Carpenter, thus making a reboot with Whedon’s name attached very unlikely. But alas, here we are with the Buffy and a new team.

Many cast members seemed happy when Gellar confirmed the reboot on her social media, but what did they say about it? Read on to find out.

Gellar played coy about the reboot until she confirmed it herself. Like every celebrity, it seems. The actress spoke about her love for Buffy on Instagram and spoke about the process of getting her on board for the reboot. Here is her statement below.

The famous statement

She begins, “Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again.

Gellar continues, “We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty-minute coffee quickly turned into a four-hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.”

The Buffy star continues her statement and says she agreed to talk with Chloe Zhao, and later other people became involved, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and then they “landed on an idea”. Once settled on an idea, she addressed the fans and their concerns, and vowed to do the reboot “right”. The 47-year-old expressed her gratitude and how “lucky” she felt to be working with the ladies on Buffy. She thanked the fans who continuously asked for a reboot, and concluded the statement.

Critics Choice Awards

At the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, the actress spoke about the Buffy reboot to the press. On the reboot, she said: “It’s so incredibly overwhelming, the outpouring that I’ve seen over the last week. While the announcement itself might have been a little premature, because we’re still getting it all together, I just…I’ve heard the fans and they’ve been asking and I’ve always said I wouldn’t do it until one day I thought, ‘Oh, we can actually do this’. That’s the way to do it.”

Praising Zhao, the director of the reboot, she commended her achievements. Describing the Buffy reboot, Gellar called it “a dream come true”.

Charisma Carpenter

How can anyone forget the legendary Cordelia Chase? Carpenter has been active on TikTok recently and has spoken on the reboot of Buffy. Despite leaving Buffy after three seasons, the actress transferred over to the spin-off Angel where she had a bigger role.

The Angel and Buffy alum commented on Gellar’s Instagram post, she said, “Could there be a more relevant time for such a story?! Long live the slayer, long live the slayer in us all! Congratulations, Sarah.”

Yes, we are cutting onions, for sure.

Carpenter was asked to address the reboot by fans. On her TikTok, she said talking about Buffy 20 years later was”beautiful”. The Angel star expressed her fondness for her role on Angel and Buffy and the opportunities the show gave her.

@charisma_carpenter

A reboot is official. Something I never imagined would happen in this lifetime or the next is actually in final talks w the preeminent slayer herself, Buffy. Aka. SMG. Also, I am blessed. So lucky to be able to fly around the world to discuss the role of a lifetime, Cordelia Chase. Thank you Avignon Geek Expo! She describes her character as the “role of a lifetime”. “I can’t think of a better time, a more relevant time to tell these stories. As I said on her social media, ‘Long live the slayer, long live the slayer in all of us’. Today more than ever requires all of us to dig deep and fight for all of our rights as Americans and human beings,” Carpenter said in her video.

The 54-year-old said her heart was “exploding” with the announcement and expressed her hopefulness to be a part of the “legacy going forward.” Maybe a Cordelia and Buffy link-up is due?

Seth Green

Another who left the show prematurely is Seth Green, who played Oz the werewolf on Buffy for four seasons. Justice for Oz, because he was done dirty by Willow and the Buffyverse. Green went on to major acting success, including a leading role voicing Chris Griffin in Family Guy and alongside Gellar in Scooby-Doo 2.

He commented on Gellar’s Instagram, “I’ll always love that we’re in two separate Scooby gangs together.” In real life, Oz and Buffy are best friends, by the way.

David Boreanaz

Boreanaz, a.k.a Angel already has experience with a Buffy reboot. Well, sort of. He was the leading character in its spinoff Angel from 1999 until 2004. Angel starts as Buffy’s vampire love interest in season 1 and becomes a supernatural helping hand in his show.

Many fans have expressed their love for Bangel and a desire for their endgamge, but we don’t think that Boreanaz would return to the Buffy verse. However, he did support the Buffy reboot idea on Gellar’s Instagram. The actor wrote: “Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans.”

The Bangel love is still alive.

Juliet Landau

Juliet Landau is an integral part of the Buffyverse. She played the British vampire, Drusilla, Spike’s (James Marsters) long-term love interest. Although Drusilla was only a recurring role, she played a huge part in Spike’s character arc and the Spuffy love story. We are Spuffy fans over here!

About the reboot, she had positive things to say. In an interview with The Radio Times, she urged fans to “give it a chance” and “see if it’s your cup of tea.”

“I think it is perfect timing for a reboot. Buffy the original series is more popular now than even when it was popular on the air. It just continues to grow and grow. A brilliant team has been assembled and you know, high school is still hell, right? That doesn’t ever seem to change. And you know, life can be hell,” she said.

Landau continues by saying this is why the show resonates with a large audience. She lists off the themes in Buffy that are relatable to many people, despite the supernatural context of the show.

When asked if she’d return to play Drusilla, Landua expressed enthusiasm, saying “It would be so much fun to play, absolutely”.

Emma Caufield

Emma Caufield played one of Buffy’s most underrated characters, the quirky demon-turned-human Anya. Anya was engaged to Xander (Nicholas Brendon) before he called off their wedding in season 6. Any Buffy fan would love to see an Anya return, honestly.

Pubilcy Caufield posted a screenshot of the announcement on Instagram and wrote: “And it’s out”. So she knew for a while then?

A woman of few words on the Buffy reboot, but expressive ones nonetheless.
