The box office smash – which grossed $160 million worldwide – saw Lohan play teenager Anna Coleman, who ends up swapping bodies with her psychiatrist mom Tess, played by Jamie Lee Curtis.
Though fans have been begging the pair for a sequel ever since, there was nothing in the pipeline – until now.
Disney Studios delighted Lohan’s 14.4 million Instagram followers by sharing a photo of the actor with Curtis, sitting in front of each other’s trailers while on set to shoot the follow-up film.
“The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” read the caption. “The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”
But what will the movie be about, and when will it hit theaters? Read on to find out everything we know about Freaky Friday 2.
Is Freaky Friday 2 definitely confirmed?
After years of rumors, Freaky Friday 2 was definitely confirmed by Disney in a press release last month.
Andrew Gunn, who produced the first film, will also be co-producing the sequel, and he will be joined by Kristin Burr and Jamie Lee Curtis. Nathan Kelly, Ann Marie Sanderlin, and Lindsay Lohan will serve as executive producers.
Curtis first fueled news of a sequel when she teased that she had proposed the project to Disney executives in October 2022.
“I’ve already written to Disney,” Curtis said during an interview on The View. “I’m 64 years old… so my point is I’m wide open, creatively I am wide open… Bring it!”
She also contacted Lohan, who was more than up for the gig. A month later, she said of their conversation, “I had to bring myself down to Earth and be like, ‘OK, I’m on set. I have to focus.’ And then she said Freaky Friday 2, and I got more excited.”
While both stars continued to insist the project was going ahead, it wasn’t until March this year that fans truly got excited by the news.
Curtis posted a photo of her and Lohan’s 2023 reunion to her Instagram, tagging Disney. “DUH! FFDEUX!” she captioned the snap.
Has Freaky Friday 2 begun filming yet?
Rejoice – as Freaky Friday 2 officially entered production on June 24! Production on the sequel began in Los Angeles, where Lohan and Curtis posed for photographers in their – and, as per the famous plot line, each other’s – trailers.
When can we expect to see Freaky Friday 2 in theaters?
Good news – Disney has confirmed Freaky Friday 2 will have a theatrical release in the U.S. sometime in 2025. The bad news? We still don’t have a definite date – so keep your eyes peeled!
Who is the cast of Freaky Friday 2?
Lohan will reprise her role as Anna Coleman, while Curtis will star once more as her mother, Tess.
Disney has also confirmed that Mark Harmon – who plays Tess’s husband Ryan – and Chad Michael Murray – Anna’s boyfriend – will return.
But they are not the only original cast members who will be returning: Christina Vidal Mitchell (Maddie), Haley Hudson (Peg), Lucille Soong (Pei-Pei’s mom), Stephen Tobolowsky (Mr. Bates), and Rosalind Chao (Pei-Pei) are also all set to join the sequel.
And that’s not all – as a host of other famous faces are set to join the cast!
The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto will also star, as well as Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
What will Freaky Friday 2 be about?
While details about the plot of Freaky Friday 2 are being kept under wraps, a handful of details have slipped through the cracks.
Freaky Friday 2 appears to feature a double swap with Lohan’s Anna and Curtis’s Tess swapping bodies once again, this time with two teenage girls.
“A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” the official logline for the series shared by Disney confirms.
An open casting call from director Nisha Ganatra teased one of the teenagers would be Anna’s 14-year-old daughter, Harper Coleman, while the other one is her soon-to-be step-sister, Lily Davies, who’s also 14. The casting call described Harper as “a teen surfer with California vibes with a sharp sense of humor [who’s] in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restaurateur Eric Davies.”
Eric’s daughter Lily is described as “sharp-tongued”, and the call continued, “Harper and Lily do not see eye to eye. Harper would like to see things go her way and use her intelligence to stop this marriage from ever happening.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Harper will swap with her mother Anna – in homage to the original story – while Lily will swap with Tess.
As far as the plot is concerned, EW notes that Lohan’s Anna plans on moving to London with her soon-to-be-husband, which Tess is apprehensive about, so maybe the swap with Lily will make her appreciate British culture…
