- First Shrek 5 teaser has arrived
- Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are returning
- Zendaya joins cast

We’re heading back to Far Far Away for a Shrek 5- and to quote studio Dreamworks, it’s not far far away either.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation confirmed in July that a sequel to 2010’s Shrek Forever After was on its way, even though the fourth film was billed as the last one. It also follows two Puss In Boots spinoffs.
Shrek is one of the biggest animated franchises of the 21st century. According to Box Office Mojo figures, the films have grossed over $1.2 billion globally. DreamWorks will also be re-releasing Shrek in theaters later this year to coincide with its 20th anniversary.
Has the Shrek 5 release date been confirmed?
Yes – Shrek 5 will be in cinemas Christmas 2026. However this wasn’t always the plan.
Originally, Dreamworks had confirmed that Shrek 5 will arrive in theaters on July 1, 2026. This changed when the movie’s first teaser trailer arrived.

The first teaser trailer for Shrek 5 arrived in late February 2025. In it, we saw the Magic Mirror act as a TikTok screen sharing some of Shrek’s most viral moments.
The trailer also revealed the addition of a new castmember with Zendaya joining its far, far away ensemble.
Who will star in Shrek 5?

Mike Myers will of course be returning as Shrek, as will Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. Zendaya has also joined the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter.
The rest of the cast remains unknown. It is also yet to be confirmed whether Antonio Banderas will return as Puss In Boots.
In June, Eddie Murphy let slip in June that he was recording for Shrek 5, as well as a standalone Donkey film.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he told Collider. “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Walt Dohrn, who worked on the second and third films as a writer and artist and as Head of Story on the fourth film, will be stepping up to the role of director. He has also worked on the Trolls franchise.
What is the plot of Shrek 5?
For now, details of the plot of Shrek 5 have not yet been confirmed.
