The last four years have been a rollercoaster ride for Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The pair shot to stardom back in 2020, when they played Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan in the hit Hulu series, Normal People, which was based on the novel by Sally Rooney.

And while they have since taken on roles which have confirmed them as the newest additions to Hollywood’s A-List, their friendship has also gone from strength to strength.

While the show that made them famous may now have aired almost half a decade ago, it is still steadily gaining a fanbase – and new viewers are discovering the very special gift that Mescal presented Edgar-Jones with when filming had completed.

In a viral video on TikTok, one user pieced together different interview clips to show how Mescal gave his friend the neck chain that became synonymous with his character.

“Here we’ve got Connell’s chain,” Mescal, 28, says at the start of the TikTok. “My emotional attachment to it is probably actually quite strong, in that it became symbolic, or like you would just attach the chain to Connell as a character. That character absolutely changed my life.”

Fans went wild for the jewelry – with some even setting up an Instagram account specifically focusing on the chain, which garnered 130k followers almost immediately after the show aired.

Despite his obvious attachment to the necklace, later in the video, Mescal disclosed that he no longer had it in his possession – as he “gave it to Daisy as a wrap gift”.

Another clip of Edgar-Jones was also added, in which she confirmed the news.

“That is true, I do have the chain,” said the Twisters actor, 26. “Paul gave it to me as a wrap gift. He gave me a little framed picture of us, and the chain was sort of attached to the back.

“At the time, I thought, ‘Oh that’s lovely’, but I didn’t realize obviously how significant that chain would become.”

‘We’re flirting with the idea’

It isn’t the first time this week that Mescal and Edgar-Jones’s close friendship has been commented on.

In an interview for Variety, the Gladiator II star revealed he and his former co-star are looking for another project to star in together.

Despite his busy upcoming schedule, Mescal admitted, “We’re basically flirting around the idea of what the next thing should look like.”

The actor later appeared on the YouTube series Hot Ones, where he revealed that the decision to cast Edgar-Jones as Marianne was a “unanimous” decision after their chemistry read for Normal People.
