Slasher horror film In A Violent Nature has dropped its first trailer – and it looks creepy.

The film is eagerly anticipated, after it received rave reviews when it was launched at the Sundance Film Festival late last month. It differs from the usual horror slasher movies in that it is filmed largely from the killer’s perspective.

Written and directed by Chris Nash, In a Violent Nature follows a silent killer who targets a group of teenagers in the Ontario wilderness, with predictably gory results.

The trailer gives a hint to the nature of the film, as it has long, lingering shots of a Canadian lake, and no dialogue, before something bobs to the surface. Our killer is seen at the end of the trailer – complete with hood and what look to be large and very sharp fishing hooks, which hints at how some characters may meet their end.

The film has drawn comparison with slow cinema, which is generally minimalist, observational and with little or no narrative, and often has long takes and scenes. Gus Van Sant is another cited influence on Nash, who also takes a slower, more methodical approach to his filmmaking.

In A Violent Nature currently has a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Cheryl Eddy from io9.com said of it: “You have never seen a slasher like this before, and probably never will again. It’s a fascinating artistic experiment and genre fans should definitely give it a look.”

Meanwhile, Megan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting said: “A fascinating arthouse horror experiment that plays more like a minimalist slice-of-life feature with a grim, gory twist.”

In a Violent Nature is produced by Shudder Films, has a runtime of 1 hour 34 minutes and will be released on the Shudder streaming service later this year, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
