With excitement for the Malcolm in the Middle revival still high, Frankie Muniz has given some news about what we can expect from the new show.

Muniz was talking to Screen Rant about his new AI thriller Renner, but the conversation inevitably strayed onto the long-hoped-for revival of the beloved comedy show, which ran from 2000 to 2006.

The 39-year-old actor, who also races stock cars, revealed that the intention initially hadn’t been for a series.

Movie pitch

“It was originally, I think, pitched like a movie, as a feature, like a two-hour movie,” he said. “And for the sake of it being a Disney+, its four 30-minute episodes, but its really on storyline.

“You’re gonna see everybody and figure out where they’ve been and what they’re doing.”

As Muniz says, we will get to catch up with the family. The official synopsis says that the new episodes will focus on Malcolm and his daughter reconnecting with his family.

Malcolm and his daughter will be drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.

Returning stars

As well as Muniz, the actors who play his father Hal and mother Lois – Bryan Cranston and Jane Maczmarek – have also been confirmed as returning.

However, while Muniz teased that we could see the whole family returning, none of the actors who played Malcolm’s brothers have confirmed they will be reprising their roles yet.

Indeed, only one of the actors who played the four brothers – Christopher Kennedy Masterson, who played the eldest, Francis – is still active in the business.

But another confirmed returnee is Linwood Boomer, who created the original series. He is the writer and executive producer on the new version.

The role of Malcolm’s daughter has yet to be cast.

More Malcolm in the Middle

Muniz also elaborated on whether this would be the last we would see of the family. “We leave it on a great note,” he said. “And then we’ll see what happens after that.”

So that definitely isn’t ruling out more outings for the Wilkerson family. Whether we get more in the future may be down to how this four-episode outing is received by fans. If it goes down well, then more may be incoming in the future.
