Warner Bros is reportedly working on a Game of Thrones movie – the first time the fantasy series will be on the big screen – but what could the focus be?
Early stages
The Hollywood Reporter, citing numerous sources, said that Warner Bros is in the early stages of developing a Game of Thrones movie. Indeed, it is at such an early stage that currently there is no writer, director or cast attached to it.
The fantasy universe created by George RR Martin has never been seen on the big screen before. There had been hopes to make Game of Thrones movies before – notably the showrunners of the original series wanted to conclude it with three movies rather than season 8. However, HBO resisted, wanting to retain it as a prestige series on the streaming network.
But times – and those in charge – change and now it seems a movie is on the cards. There have been recent successes for TV shows transferring to the big screen with spinoffs and vice-versa – perhaps most notably recently The Penguin on HBO, a spinoff from The Batman. The Penguin has received rave reviews since it started streaming earlier this year.
Game of Thrones continuation?
So if there is to be a Game of Thrones movie, what could it focus on? So far, since the end of the original Game of Thrones series, the focus has been on sequels and prequels. This includes House of the Dragon, which recently aired its second season – although stars haven’t been told about a third season yet – and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel series slated for release next year.
There is plenty of scope for storytelling in all kinds of eras of Westeros. But could there also be a movie set during the same era of Game of Thrones? That is a tantalizing prospect – could it take up the story after the controversial conclusion of the final season, perhaps?
