It’s not an awards ceremony without a bit of viral gold and this year’s Golden Globes was no different.

The Brutalist and Emilia Perez were two of the night’s major successes on the film front. On the TV side, Shogun, Hacks and Baby Reindeer were some of the shows who were raking in trophies.

Between the prizes being given out, there were plenty of big talking points from the night – some of a more serious nature, and some that were rather funny.

Demi Moore’s moving speech

Believe it or not, Demi Moore hadn’t picked up a single award for acting until last night. She won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical, seeing off stiff competition from the likes of Zendaya and Cynthia Erivo.

“I’ve been doing this a long time – like, over 45 years – and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” she said during her speech. “And I’m just so humbled and so grateful.

“Thirty years ago I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn actress’. And, at that time, I made that mean that this [award] wasn’t something that I was allowed to have. I could make movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but I couldn’t be acknowledged, and I bought in and I believed that.”

Even just a few years ago, Moore was questioning: “Maybe this [is] it. Maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do.” Then she received the script for The Substance and everything changed.

“In those moments when you don’t think you’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough – or basically just not enough… I had a woman say to me, ‘just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick’,” she said.

Nikki Glaser’s jokes

At last year’s Globes, Jo Koy’s performance as host didn’t go down too well. The same couldn’t be said of Nikki Glaser, who was widely praised.

One particularly well-received gag related to Selena Gomez, who was nominated for her roles in Emilia Perez and Only Murders In The Building.

“Selena Gomez is here, double nominee tonight, and she’s here with her new fiancé. Benny Blanco is here because of the genie who granted him that wish,” she said.

She later attempted to mash up nominated films Wicked and Conclave with a papal-themed parody of the former’s Popular.

Wicked stars try to speak Gen Z

Wicked’s Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh found themselves confused by Gen Z slang during the ceremony, despite co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande trying to explain.

“People have been calling me Zaddy but I don’t know what that means,” Goldblum said. Yeoh, meanwhile, was unsure of the meaning of people telling her that she’s been “serving mother”.

“Let’s see who ate,” Goldblum joked later as he presented an award.

Jeremy Strong’s eyebrow-raising outfit

At every awards ceremony, there always seems to be one celebrity who wears something a bit strange.

This time around, it was Succession’s Jeremy Strong. The actor came to the red carpet wearing a turquoise velvet suit and a cream roll-neck jumper, which on its own might not have been out of the ordinary. What really stood out, for better or worse, was the matching bucket hat and sunglasses.

At least it made him easy to recognise – and easy to see.
