- Netflix announced sequel to beloved comedy in presentation to advertisers
- Adam Sandler will reprise his role as the golf player with anger issues
- No word on when the film will be released

Some 28 years after the original, Netflix has just confirmed it has commissioned a sequel to Happy Gilmore.
Returns
In a presentation to advertisers, the streaming service announced that Happy Gilmore 2 had been officially given the green light – having been rumored to be in the works for some time.
Adam Sandler will be returning as the titular hero. The star has a $250 million deal to produce content for Netflix – he has already produced eight titles, including movies such as Sandy Wexler and stand-up show 100% Fresh, with the most recent being You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which dropped in August 2023.
Happy Gilmore was one of Sandler’s breakthrough movies when it was released in 1996. It told the story of a washed-up ice hockey player with anger issues who discovers a talent for golf. More importantly, he realises that if he can win tournaments, he can earn enough to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. Gilmore’s rivalry with golf tour pro Shooter McGavin only spurs him on.
Plot hints
Sandler wrote the script for the original film alongside Tim Herlihy, but it hasn’t been confirmed if both are on writing duties again this time – although it has been hinted that Sandler at least is, as has a potential plot point. Recently, Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin, has hinted he may reprise his role I the sequel. Back in March, he was quoted as saying that he had seen Sandler recently who had said to him “you’re gonna love this” before producing a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.
Netflix has yet to confirm when the film will be released and if it will get a theater release or if it will be exclusive to the streaming service.
Some other releases are also on the way. In other Netflix news, the streaming giant dropped first images of an upcoming Prince Andrew drama. Additionally, the release date for “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” has been confirmed, while “Mortal Kombat 2” is set for an October 2025 release. Stars have also confirmed that “Freaky Friday 2” is currently in the works.
