- Series will be based on the iconic DC comics
- HBO and Warner Bros Television have ordered eight episodes
- Show will form a foundational part of James Gunn’s upcoming DCU reboot

HBO and Warner Bros have confirmed that Lanterns, a new drama based on the iconic DC Green Lantern comics, has been commissioned for an eight-episode series.
Chris Mundy – known for Ozark, among others – will serve as showrunner, executive producer and co-writer on the show. His co-writers on the show will be Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also be executive producers.
Dark mystery
The series will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for a fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern’,” said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content. “As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”
Unified DCU
James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios added a joint comment, saying they were “thrilled” to bring the title to HBO. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”
However, we have yet to find out who will be cast in the leading roles and no timeline has been given for when the show will debut, but it is likely to be some time after the launch of the DCU. This much-anticipated reboot of the DCU will begin with a new Superman movie with David Corenswet as the titular hero, with others on the slate to follow, including Batman and Supergirl.
