The eagerly anticipated second season of House of the Dragon will air on HBO in June, it has been confirmed.

The confirmation was made by Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette during an interview at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom conference on Monday, March 4.

While Perrette didn’t confirm an exact date for the release of the Game of Thrones spin-off, it is the best indication yet of when the season will drop – HBO chief Casey Bloys had said last November that it would be released in “early summer.”

House of the Dragon is based on George RR Martin’s book ‘Fire & Blood’ and takes place about 200 years before Game of Thrones was set. It follows the fortunes of the Targaryen dynasty.

It is thought there will be eight episodes in this second season, but details of plotlines have been kept closely guarded so far.

However, it will follow on from the events of the final episode of season one, when ended on a major cliffhanger with Rhaenyra Targaryen’s son Lucerys dying – in true Game of Thrones style, no character is safe from death.

A trailer released in December has given us a flavor of what is to come, with Rheanyra being warned that “there is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin, and no war so bloody as a war between dragons.” So, it looks like it isn’t going to be peaceful on Westeros.

What we do know is that a raft of stars from the first season will be returning, including Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Olivia Cooke and Ewan Mitchell, among others.

When the first season of House of the Dragon aired from August to October last year, it achieved record ratings for HBO.
