A live-action How To Train Your Dragon remake is swooping our way and will soon be lighting up cinemas across the country.
This new film is based on the popular animated movie trilogy of the same name which in turn is based on the popular book series by best-selling author Cressida Cowell.
At the helm is director Dean DeBlois, the same animator-turned-live-action filmmaker who brought us the original animated film alongside fellow animation director Chris Sanders.
First released in 2010, DreamWorks Animations’ How To Train Your Dragon told the story of a young Viking warrior who befriends a juvenile dragon. Together, they form an unlikely friendship and forever change the way humans and firebreathers interact.

Does the live-action How To Train Your Dragon have a release date?
Yes. The live-action How To Train Your Dragon will get a theatrical release in the United States on 13 June 2025. The film will also be released in IMAX and RealD 3D.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is a shot-for-shot remake of its animated counterpart, written and directed by original film creator DeBlois.
Is there a trailer for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon?
There is. The first official trailer for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon movie arrived in late November 2024. It introduced us to a real-world version of its heroes. Watch it above.
Lasting just over a minute, the short teaser gave us our first glimpse at Viking-in-training Hiccup and his meeting with Night Fury dragon Toothless. Both characters bear an uncanny similarity to their animated counterparts.
The same can be said for Hiccup’s father, Stoick The Vast, who also looks just like his cartoon equivalent.
What is the plot of the live-action How To Train Your Dragon?

It may come as little surprise to learn that the plot for DeBlois’ live-action remake is almost exactly the same as his animated original.
It’s set on the mythic island of Berk where humans and dragons have been bitter rivals for generations. However, when the teenage Hiccup strikes up a surprising friendship with a dragon, everything changes.
“Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon,” explains the movie’s official log line. “Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.
Who is starring in the live-action How To Train Your Dragon?

Mason Thames, star of 2021 horror The Black Phone, will play Hiccup. The character was originally voiced by comedian and actor Jay Baruchel in DeBlois 2010 film. Meanwhile, Gerard Butler brings his animated role to vivid life by playing Hiccup’s father, Stoick The Vast.
Together, they’re joined by The Last of Us star Nico Parker as Hiccup’s love interest Astrid and Deadpool 2’s Julian Dennison as Hiccup’s best pal Fishlegs. Ingerman and Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn appear as twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston respectively. Plus, Gabriel Howell will play Hiccup’s cousin Snotlout Jorgenson.
Shaun of the Dead‘s Nick Frost stars as Viking Gobber the Belch, with The Fall of the House of Usher’s Ruth Code as Phlegma.
Comedian Peter Serafinowicz and English actor Murray McArthur will also star however their roles remain a mystery.
