He was one of Britain’s best loved rom-com actors.

But in recent years Hugh Grant’s career has taken a darker turn.

The actor, 64, has been taking on grittier roles – and his performance in Heretic is no different.

In the horror-thriller movie, which will be released in the US on November 8, Grant will play the terrifying Mr Reed.

According to the film’s synopsis, two young missionaries become ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they knock on the door of Reed. Trapped in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive.

‘I killed three people this afternoon’

Grant’s performance has gone down a treat with critics – but his red carpet appearances have almost been more entertaining.

In an interview with Associated Press, the Bridget Jones star was asked if he carries darker roles in his mind for a long time.

While the rogue question may have put other celebrities off, Grant took it in his stride – and displayed his very British sense of humor in the process

“I killed three people this afternoon. I feel awful about that,” he joked drily.

Fans went wild on Twitter/X for the comments – but his performance in the movie is still what sent tongues wagging.

“Hugh Grant delivers a career-best performance in #Heretic (sorry Paddington 2 fans,” wrote one fan. “A charming, chilling and captivating antagonist who will have you questioning everything you believe in.”

“Hugh Grant genuinely gives one of my favorite performances this year in #Heretic,” said another. “It’s crazy how if you take all his quirks and just turn them slightly and they become terrifying. His rant about music is a scene of the year.”

Someone else exclaimed, “Holy s***. I think #Heretic is my favorite horror movie of the year. The ideas and themes in this film are so brilliantly constructed that I would argue it’s a must-see for anyone who has even the slightest interest in religion. Hugh Grant is magnificently charming and creepy.

A fourth added, “HERETIC is a Smart, Sinister PSYCHOLOGICAL Thriller. It’s a film about choices, Believing and Faith. Hugh Grant is at his career best here playing a charming, malicious sociopath. Trust me, YOU need to watch this film.”
