In a TikTok story, actress Hunter Schafer posted a video blasting her passport gender change. Schafer is best known for her role as Jules Vaughn in the HBO drama Euphoria. She’s played the role of transgender teenager Jules since 2019 and will reprise the role in season 3 of the show. Schafer herself is also an openly transgender woman and has been outspoken about the rights of trans people. In the video, Schafer posted the 8-minute story about her “harsh reality check” with her passport. You can view the video below.

The passport video

In the video, Schaffer shows her alleged passport and where it lists her gender it lists the M for male. For context about the passport issue, President Trump signed an executive order on 20 January to only use Male (M) and Female (F) markers on passports issued by the state. Since 2022 under President Joe Biden, those applying for passports could select their gender marker by being issued a passport with the marker X.

The actress starts by explaining the executive order in question and her experience. But what did she say in her video about her experience and the passport gender change? Read on to get all the information.

What did Hunter Schafer say about her passport?

The 26-year-old starts by contextualizing the executive order and what it means for the passports and the gender markers on them. Schaffer starts: “My initial reaction to this because our President is a lot of talk was like, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.'”

She then holds up her new passport to the camera, showing that there is an ‘M’ marked near her gender. The Euphoria tells her fans that her gender markets were “first changed in [her] teens” when she got a driver’s license and a passport.

On why she renewed her passport, she says she did because when she was filming in Barcelona her passport got stolen because her bag was broken into. After that, she got an emergency passport and then had to get a new one when she came back to the USA.

Schafer said “No part of the process was different”

She said about the process: “I’ve had to do this one time before. No part of the process was different. I filled everything out just like I normally would. I put female and when it was picked up today and I opened it up, they had changed the marker to male.”

In posting the video, she said she was doing it to raise awareness.

“I’m not making this post to fear-monger, or to create drama, or receive consolation, I don’t need it. But I do think it’s worth posting to sort of note the reality of the situation and that it’s actually happening. I was shocked. I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen. I want to acknowledge my privilege, not only as a celebrity transwoman who is white. I pass, and it still happened,” Schafer said.

Hunter Schaffer’s thoughts on why it happened

The actress said that this didn’t happen with her birth certificate being changed so she thinks that the agencies dealing with passports are “required” to use documentation to determine the passport’s gender marker.

She said she believes that the reason for this is because of “the administration that our country is currently operating under”. The video continues with the actress saying she’s “scared” with the way “these things are implemented” and references Trump’s administration.

“I feel like it’s important to share that it’s not just talk, that this is real. And it’s happening, and no one, no matter their circumstance, no matter how wealthy or white or pretty or whatever is excluded,” Schaffer told her followers.

Speaking on the actual marker, she said she didn’t care about it because it doesn’t change “anything about me or my transness”, although it does make life hard. Given the fact that Schafer is a woman, the M gender marker on the passport could make traveling and going through security different.

Hunter Schafer’s Fear of being outed

Speaking to the camera, the actress expressed a possible fear of “[outing herself] to border patrol.” However, she mentioned she was thinking of “other trans people” who could also be in these circumstances.

She concluded the video, “Trans people are beautiful, we are never going to stop existing, I’m never going to stop being trans. A letter and a passport can’t change that.”
