Thomas Ceccon, who won gold in the pool at the Olympics, went viral when he was snapped sleeping in a Paris park. Initially it was speculated that was because of his complaints about conditions at the Olympic village but he has now taken to TikTok to clear the matter up.

Snapped snoozing

Ceccon, who was snapped snoozing by a fellow athlete, said in as clip on the site that he simply went for a ride on his bike to a park, where he decided to have a quick nap. “I take a nap for one hour and social media explodes,” he laughs.

So there you have it – it wasn’t down to conditions at the Olympic Village. Ceccon was just getting some shut-eye after some training.

But Ceccon, who won the 100 meters backstroke, had previously complained about being tired after he failed to qualify for the final in the 200 meters. After the race he had said it was hard to sleep with the heat and the noise in the Olympic Village. He also said there was no air conditioning and the food was bad.

Village controversy

The conditions at the Olympic Village have caused some controversy. A rumour went round as athletes moved in that the beds were made from cardboard to prevent them from getting overly amorous with each other. However, Irish gymnast Reece McClenaghan disproved that in a viral video.

The reason for cardboard beds is simply part of the Olympics organising committee’s attempts to make the Games more sustainable.
