The 28 Weeks Later star called his mistake “tiny but monumental”. He detailed the details of the graphic accident in his memoir titled My Next Breath: A Memoir.
Per the book’s description, it will detail his accident and “what he learned about inner strength, endurance, and hope as he overcame insurmountable odds to recover”.
See here what accident the actor had, and the mistake that led to it.
What accident did Jeremy Renner have?
The accident took place on 1 January 2023, when Renner was run over by a snowplow. However, it wasn’t a freak accident, it stemmed from a mistake he made. At his home in Lake Tahoe, the harrowing accident happened.
How did it happen? By trying to be a good citizen. The actor was towing a vehicle stuck in the snow due to a storm in the area.
Renner detailed the mistake in his memoir, which was released on 29 April.
“Before exiting the driver’s cab! – Apply parking brake,’ the manual says. But I didn’t engage the parking brake or disengage the steel tracks,” the star wrote in his book.
He continued, “In that moment – an innocent, critical, life-changing moment – that tiny but monumental slip of the mind would change the course of my life for ever.”
“My feet lost their grip on the moving tracks, and I never made it to the cab. I lurched violently forward, out of control,” recalled the actor in the book.
The extract continued, “In that split second, I was catapulted off the spinning metal tracks, arms flailing. I arced over the front of the tracks, propelled forward, down on to the hard-packed ice, where my head hit the ground hard and instantly gashed open.”
Later, he recalled the snowplow running over his body, describing it as a “horrifying soundtrack”.
He broke over 38 bones from it.
What was the aftermath?
After the almost-fatal incident, Renner was airlifted to the hospital for surgery. He had orthopedic injuries and injuries to his chest. Bodycam footage captured the incident, and Renner detailed his recovery in several videos.
Worryingly, the actor said that after his accident, he did not know the extent of all of his injuries. Renner spoke about the concentration of how he had to breathe for 45 minutes before paramedics came to save him.
“So that part just saved me. Zooming out, focusing on just breathing. Because I wasn’t going to breathe, it didn’t matter that my eyeballs were out of my head and that my legs were all twisted up like a pretzel. Doesn’t matter. You’ve got to breathe first,” Renner told CBS Mornings.
Renner is such a brave man, and has mostly recovered, but still has therapy to help him.
