Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik/Eggman in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 – released December 2024

While there might be a huge amount of CGI in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, there is one scene that was for real – when Eggman has his head shaved, as Jim Carrey has revealed.

Shaved on set

Carrey, 63, told Entertainment Weekly that in a scene where Dr Ivo Robotnik/Eggman has his head shaved by his assistant, Stone, the shaving was done for real.

When we first encounter Carrey’s iconic scientist character in the Sonic 3, he is in a bad way, having taken his defeat at the end of the second movie rather badly. Having put on weight and grown long, straggly hair, he looks rather different. But at some point he gets his evil mojo back and is transformed, with the help of Stone, back to his usual self.

In a video, Lee Majdoub, who plays Stone, confirms that he cuts Carrey’s hair – which he had been growing for 18 months – on camera. “It was so much fun and he wanted me to do it, and he showed me a lot of trust.”

Returning characters

Carrey and Madjoub are just two of the returning actors to the franchise. Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic, with Idris Elba voicing Knuckles the Echidna. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter also return as Sonic’s human friends.

One new cast member is Keanu Reeves, who is voicing Shadow the Hedgehog, who is set to be one of the main antagonists in the new film.

Anticipation for the third instalment of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is ramping up. Earlier this month, director Jeff Fowler teased that some new and unexpected characters might crop up in the movie. Sonic the Hedgehog has no shortage of characters from the video games, comics and TV shows, so there is plenty of speculation as to who it could be. Also, if they appear in the end credits – as has happened previously – it could set up a fourth film in the franchise.
