In a recent interview with Empire, Stahelski teased the film and spoke about leaving the High Table – the secret council who govern the world’s assassins – in the past.

The news of the fifth instalment came at last month’s ComicCon in Las Vegas, where Lionsgare also confirmed they are continuing to explore the John Wick universe.

Though John Wick: Chapter 4 seemingly brought an end to Keanu Reeves’ character, the audience never actually saw his death – leaving the door wide open for a Hollywood return.

“The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up”

Stahelski explained that the latest film won’t pick up from where Chapter 4 ended and that “the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick”.

The director also made it clear that “It’s not a continuation with the High Table.”

The High Table’s power took a major hit at the end of Chapter 4, when John Wick won a duel that forced them to honor an old rule.

He added “John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy f***… I gotta see that.’”

The universe is expanding

Before John Wick 5 arrives, fans have plenty to be excited about. A spin-off film, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas is on the way, along with a TV series called Under the High Table. There’s also an animated prequel exploring how Wick left the assassin life – with the latter two projects helping to set the stage for the fifth film.

“The John Wick TV show and the animation are big priorities,” Stahelski said. “Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for John 5.”

Ballerina is the next to hit theaters – on 6 June. The film is set after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3. According to the official logline “The film follows de Armas as an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma organization [who] sets out to seek revenge after her father’s death”.
