- Rumors over sequel fuelled by post by Gad on X
- Movie from the 1980s has become a cult classic
- Further rumors that star from first film – rarely seen today – is on board too

Josh Gad has sent the internet into overdrive by teasing that he could be appearing in a sequel to a beloved 80s sci-fi spoof film.
Gad posted an image of a heavily redacted script on social media along with the caption: “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best I’ve ever worked on and I’m so freaking excited.”
While black marker pen obscures much of the text, enough can be gleaned to hint that it is a script for Spaceballs 2. For instance, it says ‘based on characters created by Mel’ and the words ‘Ext: star field’ – both could be linked to that film.
Spaceballs has become a cult classic since its release in 1987. It was Co-written, produce and directed by Mel Brooks and spoofed sic-fi films such as Star Wars. It started Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, John Candy and others.
The plot of Spaceballs sounds familiar: in a distant galaxy, renegade pilot Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog companion Barf go on a mission to rescue Princess Vespa from the evil Dark Helmet.
A sequel has been talked about for more than a decade but now it looks like it could be closer than ever to happening.
Meanwhile, Moranis, who has been largely absent from our screens since the 1990s, recently appeared as Dark Helmet in an episode of The Goldbergs, leading to the hope he could be tempted into a larger return in a Spaceballs sequel.
