The Fantastic Four: First Steps is hugely anticipated and a big question is what Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer will look like and she has teased what to expect.
ScreenRant asked Garner if her Silver Surfer will be live-action, CGI or a combination and her response was… cryptic. “You Know. I’m – its shiny,” she said. “But all the Silver Surfers are shiny, so it doesn’t give you anything. I’m sorry, So we’ll wait and see.”
Shiny
While that comment only gives us confirmation that her Silver Surfer – the female incarnation of the character, Shalla-Bal – is shiny. So at least it is staying true to the comic book form in that way.
Shalla-Bal has been part of Marvel comics since 1968. Originally, she was empress of the planet Zenn-La, and her lover was Norrin Radd. Radd made a deal with Galactus, the planet-eater, to spare Zenn-La, and Shalla-Bal, in exchange for becoming his herald, and thus becoming the Silver Surfer. In an alternative reality, she has also been a silver surfer.
When the Silver Surfer was previously featured on screen, in the pre-MCU Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2005, it was done by mixing CGI and live-action effects. How Shalla-Bal will appear has yet to be confirmed, but the MCU has plenty of form for using CGI effects for its characters.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Garner is part of a stellar cast for the movie, which will open up Phase 6 of the MCU. She will be alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ralph Ineson, Ebon Moss-Bacharach and Joseph Quinn.
Marvel has given us some hints about what to expect in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It is set in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, It will see Marvel’s First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.
