Directed by Live Free or Die Hard’s Len Weisman, the movie tells a new tale that’s set within a pre-existing narrative that fans of the original John Wick franchise will already be familiar with.
In a newly released trailer, we get a better sense of this new story and its setting. Armas plays Eve Macarro, a ballerina who doubles-up as a deadly assassin trained by the highly skilled Ruska Roma group of killers.
Throughout the film, we see her set out to get vengeance against the people responsible for her father’s death. It’s a task that will bring her face-to-face with the Baba Yaga himself, John Wick. We see Reeves return as Wick in the film’s final trailer, with Eve and Wick facing off at full pelt.

So far, so cool – but any fan of the John Wick franchise will known that a new Wick appearance feels unlikely. So how is he back for more?

Fans of the Wick universe will know that – up until recently – a continuation of the character’s story seemed unlikely.
Warning: John Wick spoilers lurk below
After going up against the High Table – a group of clandestine criminals that control the gritty hit-man underworld – Wick eventually came out on top. However, it came at great cost.
During the climactic moments of John Wick 4, audiences are led to believe that Wick lost his life in securing his own freedom from this evil underworld. Almost immediately, questions were asked regarding the validity of his death. After all, audiences didn’t see a dead body.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that John Wick would return in a new movie that’s currently in pre-production. How will he return from the grave? Well, that remains to be seen – but it doesn’t explain his appearance in Ballerina.
How is Keanu Reeves back as John Wick in Ballerina?
Wiseman’s spin-off movie uses a narrative device to help inject John Wick into Eve Macarro’s story. The tool helps provide some additional action sandwiched within an already established storyline and a brand new story.
The key? Ballerina is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4. In the former, we saw Wick visit the same Ruska Roma ballet school where Eve is completing her assassin training.
Clearly, the pair cross paths – with this latest trailer showing the pair come face-to-face. Well, through a sniper lens at least.
