After the success this summer of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, star Michael Keaton has revealed he would be keen to resurrect his role for a third film.

Positive response

In an interview with E! News on the red carpet for new film Goodrich, Keaton was asked if he would like to appear in a Beetlejuice 3. His answer wasn’t coy: “Oh yeah, I’d do it every year, yeah,” he said.

Keaton’s response isn’t a surprise. He has previously professed his love for the character and films in other interviews.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to the original 1989 film, has been a critical and commercial success since it was released earlier this year. In its first week, it was the number one film in the US and 40 other countries around the world. This included the UK, Australia, Mexico and Latin America.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice saw Keaton reprise his titular role. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara also returned as Lydia and Delia Deetz. They were joined notably by Jenna Ortega, who played Lydia’s daughter. The film was also notable for eschewing CGI effects, rather using traditional puppets and effects, in keeping with its old-school B-movie feel.

No green light

But while Keaton may be keen to make a third film, and the sequel performed well at the box office – it made more than $400 million globally – it is uncertain if one will be made.

Thus far, a third movie has not been commissioned. When director Tim Burton was asked by Variety in August about making another movie, he said “I don’t know”. although he also didn’t rule out the possibility.
