Kyle Chandler, star of Friday Night Lights and Godzilla vs Kong, is being lined up to play a major role in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series.

In talks

The eight-episode series, which is based on the iconic Green Lantern comic by DC, is currently recruiting actors to play the major roles. Emmy winner Chandler, 59, is in talks to play Hal Jordan, according to Deadline.

Josh Brolin is rumored to have turned the role of Jordan down. Meanwhile, there is no word on any actor being in talks to play Stewart.

The series will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The series was greenlit for development in June and will form a foundational part of James Gunn’s reboot of the DC Universe.  The rebooted DC Universe is set to launch next summer with Superman. There is no word on when Lanterns will hit our screens.

Foundational part

Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios said at the announcement of the series that they were “thrilled” to bring the title to HBO. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer.”

Chris Mundy – best known for Ozark – is serving as showrunner on Lanterns. The series is being written by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book writer Tom King. They will also serve as executive producers on the show.
