Larry David has taken aim at Bill Maher in a new satirical essay for The New Yorker.

David penned a joke essay that pokes fun at the Real Time host’s recent visit to Donald Trump’s White House. In an article entitled ‘My Dinner With Adolf’, David appears to make fun of Maher’s apparent re-appraisal of the President.

Maher has long been skeptical of Trump both on and off his popular political TV show. In response, the President has also fired shots back at Maher over the years.

David uses hyperbole to imagine a fictionalised interaction between himself and Hitler. His fake account shows how the dictator came off as more “human” than he expected.

In a note added by the Deputy Opinion Editor of The New Yorker, Patrick Healy, reiterated that David was not comparing Trump to Hitler. Instead, he was “arguing that during a single dinner or a private meeting, anyone can be human, and it means nothing in the end about what that person is capable of.”

David wrote in his spoof essay, “I had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship.

“But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere. I knew I couldn’t change his views, but we need to talk to the other side.”

“Suddenly he seemed so human” jokes Larry David

David continued, appearing to find humor in Maher’s recent descriptions of the President as “gracious” and more self aware of his public image than he lets on.

“I joked that I was surprised to see him in a tan suit because if he wore that out, it would be perceived as un-Führer-like. That amused him to no end, and I realized I’d never seen him laugh before,” joked David.

“Suddenly he seemed so human. Here I was, prepared to meet Hitler, the one I’d seen and heard — the public Hitler. But this private Hitler was a completely different animal. And oddly enough, this one seemed more authentic, like this was the real Hitler.

“The whole thing had my head spinning.”

Maher met Trump at the White House in late March and discussed it on his TV show Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday 12 April. He was invited via a mutual connection, the American music star Kid Rock.

During his detailed account of his meeting with the President, Maher appeared to be surprised at glimpsing a more version of the Head of State which was more charming than he expected.

He went on to call Trump “gracious and measured” while asking “why he isn’t that in other settings, I don’t know and I can’t answer and it’s not my place to answer. I’m just telling you what I saw and I wasn’t high.”
