  • LeBron James made history in several ways during Lakers’ season opening victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves
  • James became first NBA player to share the court with his son in league history
  • 20 time All-Star scored 16 points and won a season opener with the Lakers for the first time in seven attempts

LeBron James seems to break records or make history more often than he doesn’t the deeper into his all-conquering career he plays. But the four time NBA champion could have probably gone without one of the records that he broke during the Lakers opening night victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, last night.

James not only became one half of the first father-son duo to play in the NBA together as well as equalling Vince Carter’s record for most NBA seasons played. He also overtook Kobe Bryant as being the player with the most missed shots in NBA history.

Now, of course, this is likely to be a record that leaves LeBron James relatively unbothered, given the gargantuan levels of success he has enjoyed over the past 20 years. It is also a record that reflects his mind-bending longevity on the court and his unsurpassed determination to win basketball games. It is also par for the course for someone who has scored the most points and played the most minutes in basketball history.

When James missed his sixth shot in the third quarter of the Lakers 110-103 victory over the Timberwolves last night, it took his tally of failed field goal attempts from 14,476 to 14,482.

The record is staggering given the fact that a lot of players don’t even attempt 14,482 shots in their entire careers, let alone missed attempts. Per CBS Sports, the top 27 in all-time field goal misses are either in the Hall of Fame or are not far from being inducted into it.

LeBron, of course, would rather a lot more of those 14,482 shots had found the net, but with nobody beating his scoring record for a long, long time (if ever) he also likely realises that the failed effort record is an almost inevitable byproduct of his monster scoring stats.

The record breaking attempt in question came during a transition layup attempt that was being defended by new Wolves guard Donte DiVincenzo. LeBron finished the night with 16 points, earning the 20-time All Star his first opening night victory as a Laker, since joining the franchise in 2018.
