- Payne’s family have asked for privacy and space after former One Direction star fell to his death in Argentina
- “Liam will live forever in our hearts”
- Fans have begun an impromptu vigil outside the hotel in Buenos Aires where Payne died
The family of former One Direction star Liam Payne have released a statement expressing their grief following the untimely death of the 31-year-old singer.
Payne tragically fell from the third floor balcony of his suite at the Hotel Casa Sur yesterday evening and was pronounced dead at the scene, with City ambulance service provider spokesman Alberto Crescenti confirming that the singer had fallen around 40 metres and suffered “severe injuries which were incompatible with life.”
In the last hour, Payne’s family have released an emotional statement,“We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.
“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
Payne’s uncle Roger Harris also told MailOnline, “We are all just deeply saddened and trying to come to terms with it. I just hope everybody gives them some privacy really and allows them to come to terms with it. That’s all I can say.”
Police were called to the hotel in Buenos Aires’ Palermo neighbourhood, after a member of the hotel’s staff called to report a man acting aggressively at the hotel who could be under the effect of drink or drugs. It is reported that Payne had to be escorted back to his room.
An impromptu vigil has begun outside of the hotel, with heartbroken One Direction fans lighting candles and singing Payne’s songs as they mourn the late singer.
