While we are still taking in stories from this year’s Grammy Awards, which took place last week, a funny story from the 2007 ceremony has just re-emerged involving Justin Timberlake and Ludacris.
Ludacris, talking on DJ EFN and N.O.R.E’s ‘Drink Champs’ show, recalled a backstage moment from 17 years ago involving a less-than-happy Timberlake.
Back in 2007, Ludacris was enjoying his night, having just won the Best Rap Album Grammy for ‘Release Therapy’ and, having gone backstage, was letting out his emotions and using some language that, shall we say, he would have got in trouble for if he’d used it on stage. For Ludacris, this award was special as he’d never won a Grammy before – so was understandably emotional.
But at the time, after collecting an award, artists went into small holding areas backstage, which were separated by thin curtains, so sound travelled between the areas.
Evidently, whoever was in the next-door area took exception to Ludacris’ expression of joy, as a voice said: “Shut the f*** up, some of us didn’t win any g****** Grammys!!!”
Taken aback, Ludacris pulled back the curtain to find Justin Timberlake on the other side, who evidently wasn’t in a good mood. He had just lost out on the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album Of The Year for ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’, so its understandable.
But Timberlake’s mood would improve later in the night as he picked up two Grammys for Best Rap/Song Collaboration for ‘My Love’ and Best Dance Recording for ‘Sexy Back.’
The incident hasn’t led to any lingering beef between the two either. Ludacris finds the story funny now and referred to Timberlake as ‘gangsta’, so there’s no animosity there.
Makes you wonder what stories we’ll hear about what went on backstage at the 2024 awards in 2041, doesn’t it?
