  • Robbie is set to play Catherine Earnshaw, while Elordi will portray Heathcliff

Following on from the questionable bath water drinking, grave bothering insanity that was Saltburn, Emerald Fennell is tackling one of the classics for her next project, and has a couple of heavy hitting A-listers on board to help her tackle an iconic Emily Brontë work.

The English filmmaker will be adapting Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, the only novel the second youngest of the famous three sisters would write, before she died at the age of 30.

To bring the 19th century story to life for its big screen adaptation, Fennell will reunite with Jacob Elordi, with whom she worked on Saltburn and Margot Robbie, who Fennell acted alongside in last year’s Barbie movie, playing Midge.

Wuthering Heights centers on the relationship between Robbie’s Catherine Earnshaw and Elordi’s Heathcliff, an orphan who is fostered by Earnshaw’s wealthy family on the West Yorkshire Moors.

Fennell’s adaptation will be the latest in a long line of adaptations of Wuthering Heights, with the first coming in 1920, directed by AV Bramble. William Wyler then directed another version in 1939, starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon, earning a nomination for Best Picture at that year’s Academy Awards, although it is considered quite an inaccurate depiction of the original story.

One time James Bond Timothy Dalton played Heathcliff in a 1970 adaptation, while Ralph Fiennes took on the role, opposite Juliette Binoche as Catherine, in 1992, directed by Peter Kosminsky. And, of course, Kate Bush absolutely knocked it out of the park with her 1978 breakthrough single of the same name.

No release date has been announced for the project yet, although Elordi and Robbie will appear in a few new releases in the meantime, with Elordi starring in Prime Video series The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein movie for Netflix. Robbie, meanwhile, will appear alongside Colin Farrell in A Big, Bold, Beautiful Journey, which lands in theatres in 2025.
