  • Sony approved Green Golbin’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home
  • No Way Home was a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios
  • The Spider-Man film rights and the associated characters are held by Sony

Sony’s past involvement with the Spider-Man franchise may be preventing some characters from appearing in future Marvel Cinematic Universe pictures.

This is according to industry insider Daniel Richtman, who took to X to discuss the upcoming Kraven The Hunter film and the villains who will feature in it.

Kraven is an adversary of Spider-Man and is receiving his own film, released this December, but comic book fans have been left a little frustrated by the amount of characters involved, which is apparently due to Sony Pictures controlling the film rights and associated characters within those films.

In other words, if Sony have already used a character in one of their Spider-Man films, Marvel Studios need to be granted permission to use the same character in one of their Spidey flicks. This is why we saw Willem Dafoe’s Green Golbin appear in No Way Home, as the film was a collaboration between the studios.

It would also explain why Sony are loading up their pictures with so many characters, such as Venom and Morbius, before Marvel gets a chance to use them.

Posting on X, Richtman said, “Kraven has Rhino, Calypso and Chameleon. Whenever Sony uses a villain, they block Marvel Studios from using them, which means there aren’t many left for MCU Spider-Man to face off against”.

Kraven The Hunter will be Sony’s sixth entry into their Spider-Man universe and will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role.
