- Fifth instalment in Matrix franchise confirmed by Warner Bros.
- Will be first film in the series not written or directed by one of the Wachowski sisters
- No word on if Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo

Ready to go down the rabbit hole again? A fifth film in the Matrix series is being worked on, Warner Bros has confirmed.
It has also been confirmed that Drew Goddard – best known for work on films such as The Martian and World War X – is writing and directing the film. This means it will be the first film in the series not to be directed by either Lana or Lily Wachowski – although Lana is on board as an executive producer.
Currently, there is no word on what the plot of the film we be, or if it will be a continuation from 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections. Likewise, there is no word on if any of the stars of the previous films – notably Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) – will be reprising their roles.
The only hint at what could be in store has come from Warner’s president of production, Jesse Ehrman, who said the story will advance the established world, but not stray too far from what made the series a success in the first place.
In a statement, Ehrman said: “Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lily began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
Goddard added: “Lana and Lily’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
