Tony Soprano remains an iconic character, despite it being years since The Sopranos ended. But will we see more of him? Michael Gandolfini suspects not.
Michael, who played a teenage version of Tony Soprano in 2021 spinoff movie, The Many Saints of Newark, has been talking about the character in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
Since that movie there has been speculation about whether there might be a prequel series made. However, Michael – son of James Gandolfini, who played Tony in all six seasons of the show – suspects that it isn’t going to happen.
“It’s David’s universe,” he said, referring to David Chase, who created The Sopranos. “It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos-related, which would be exciting.”
Michael added that he suspected Tony would be laid to rest for good now. “But who knows,” he added.
Sopranos reign
The Sopranos was an instant hit when the first season dropped in 1999. Fans loved Tony Soprano and his exploration of trying to balance family life with being the head of a criminal organization through therapy sessions with a psychiatrist.
The show, which was broadcast on HBO, ran for 86 episodes over six seasons and is now regarded as a classic and highly influential show. It won many awards during its time, including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes. The ending of the show in 2007 has become iconic.
Grateful to be part of it
Michael added that he was “honored” to have played a small part in the Tony Soprano story in The Many Saints of Newark. That movie was set during the 1960s, against a backdrop of the Newark riots – a real-life event in New Jersey that saw 26 people die and hundreds seriously injured.
“I got to be a small part of that huge world and like, that is one of the greatest gifts that has ever really been a part of my career. So I’m grateful for it and I’m ready to move on and be a new thing.”
James Gandolfini passed away in 2013, aged just 51.
