Up to 60 characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could be returning for the forthcoming Avengers 5 film, according to industry rumors.

Deadline and others have reported that familiar heroes such as Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) could be set for a return.

However, there was no mention if Captain America (Chris Evans) might return, nor characters that have previously died in the films, such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) or Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr). However, as everyone knows with superheroes, death is not necessarily the end, so never say never.

Additionally, it has been reported by Deadline that Marvel Studios is in talks with Shawn Levy to take over in the director’s chair for the film. Levy has directed the much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine film, which drops later this summer, and that could have put him to the top of the list.

But Levy is not the only director in the frame to take over from Destin Daniel Cretton, who was originally down to direct but quit last year. Marvel apparently has other directors in mind, should Levy turn the opportunity down.

The fifth Avengers film had previously been titled Avengers: Kang Dynasty, but since the actor who played Kang, Jonathan Majors, was fired due to his criminal convictions, there have been rumors that, rather than recast the role of Kang, Marvel would drop the character and take the film in a different direction.

If Marvel are going down to ensemble route, it asks the question of who the antagonist might be – and how it will set things up for Avengers 6, which is planned to involve a Secret Wars plot.
