Good news for first-person shooter fans: the next instalment of the Doom franchise has been confirmed for release in 2025 and takes the series in a new direction.
Prequel game
Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel game to the 2016 Doom game and includes a dark fantasy with a medieval-inspired theme. In the game, as Slayer players will battle demonic hordes in combat, in a wider tale of gods, kings and monsters. Slayer will even be able to take to the skies on a jet-fuelled cybernetic war dragon.
The first trailer screenshots for the game were released at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 and give an idea of how big Slayer will be, along with some elements of classic gameplay. It also includes the cryptic sentence ‘before he became a hero he was the super weapon of gods and kings’.
The game will be released in 2025 – no further indication of exactly when – and will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5 and PC. This will continue the trend of Microsoft pushing Xbox games onto multiple platforms.
There had been rumors that id Software had been developing a new game, but this was the first official notice that a game is on its way.
Pioneering franchise
This will be the latest in the Doom franchise, which first started with 1993’s Doom, which is regarded as a classic as it was a pioneer in first-person shooter games. Since then, there have been numerous sequels and to date more than 10 million copies of Doom games have been sold.
