- A sixth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is in the works
- Last Pirates film was released seven years ago
- Details are emerging of what might be in the film

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most successful movie franchises of this century – and now there is a sixth film in the works. Here is all we know about it.
The last Pirates film, Dead Men Tell No Tales – known internationally as Salazar’s Revenge – was released in 2017. This film focused on Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) searching for the Trident of Poseidon to defeat Armando Salazar, who is seeking revenge on Sparrow and every other pirate at sea.
At the time, it was indicated that this would not be the last film in the franchise by its directors, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. Now, we know more about what is coming.
Bruckheimer back on board
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is back on board for the sixth film. Earlier this year, he confirmed that there were plans for a sixth film and that a script had been written for it and that it would be a reboot of the franchise. However, he didn’t expand on who might be in the cast for the film.
Two Pirates movies
Bruckheimer, in a later interview with Entertainment Weekly, then said there were two Pirates movies in the works. A reboot, and a female-centric film with connections to the previous movies, potentially with Margot Robbie in the lead role.
Production to begin
Production on the sixth and as yet untitled Pirates film will begin in late 2025, according to World of Reel. Production is set to be on the island of St Vincent.
Stars to return?
Of course, Depp’s Sparrow has become iconic throughout the course of the Pirates films – and arguably carried a couple of the later ones – so could they really not include the character? Thus far, the answer is a definite maybe.
The reboot will apparently have an all-new cast, so it would seem Depp wouldn’t be involved with that one. But the other female-centric film would have connections to the previous films, so he could at least make a cameo in that. Bruckheimer has also indicated that he would like to see Depp return.
Elsewhere, in 2023 Orlando Bloom expressed an interest in reprising his role of Will Turner, who was central to the first three films and also appeared in the fifth.
However, Kiera Knightley has said that she doesn’t intend to join a new film and reprise her Elizabeth Swann character. Although she did also say she might come back if it were a final film in the franchise.
