- Eddie Murphy, the voice of Donkey, gave update on progress of franchise
- Shrek has been one of the biggest grossing film franchises of this century.
- Murphy also teased that there will be a spinoff movie focusing on Donkey

Shrek is one of the biggest movie franchises of this century and the good news for fans is that the wait for a fifth film could soon be over, according to one of its stars.
Production in process
Eddie Murphy, who has voiced Donkey since the first film was released in 2001, has said that a new Shrek film – which will be the first in more than a decade – could hit theaters sometime next year.
In an interview with Collider to promote his new film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy said that he has already recorded some dialogue for the new as-yet-untitled Shrek film. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said.
Shrek is one of the biggest animated franchises of the 21st century, with the four films having grossed more than $1.2 billion globally, according to Box Office Mojo figures. However, it has been 14 years since the last film, Shrek Forever After, hit theaters.
Donkey spinoff
Murphy also revealed that there are plans to make a spinoff film focusing on Donkey, which will be made once the new Shrek film has been completed.
Murphy said that the standalone Donkey film would explore new sides to the beloved character. After all, Puss in Boots has had two full films, both of which have been well received by critics and fans alike. There is plenty to explore in Donkey’s backstory before he met Shrek, and he is one of the most popular characters in the film for his fast-talking and quick-wittedness.
However, Murphy gave no clues as to when a Donkey film might see the light of day – so it might be quite a wait.
