- Super Mario Bros Movie 2 is set to arrive in 2026
- The movie is set to broaden the Mario universe, according to one of its stars
- It is also set to feature some old favourite characters

The new Super Mario Bros movie will expand the universe it is set in and feature some old favourites from the game, one of its stars has revealed.
News of a second Super Mario movie was broken on Mario Day (March 10 – Mar10, geddit?) this year, but since then there has been barely a whisper about what might be in the movie. Until now.
Broader scope
Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad in the movies, has teased what the second movie may have in store. Speaking to Men’s Journal, Key said that the second film has a broader scope and expands the Mario universe. It also includes “very intriguing lore” as well as some “really fantastic Easter eggs,” he added.
Key also hinted that there will be some new faces in the movie, as well as “old favourites”, including “some really deep cuts”.
Loads of lore
There is plenty of lore in the Mario games – and there have been dozens over the past 40 or so years – as well as a wealth of characters, some of whom are seen more regularly than others.
Indeed, Chris Pratt, who provides the voice of the titular plumber in the Illumination film, spoke earlier in the year to Screen Rant about his desire for a world of interconnected Nintendo movies.
“There’s so much to explore,” Pratt said. “There are decades worth of [games] to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi… I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo cinematic universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love? I mean, there’s really no limit.”
The second Super Mario Bros movie is expected to land in theaters in 2026.
