Oppenheimer, the movie of the story of J Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb, took five awards at the Golden Globes 2024, while its box office rival Barbie only took one.
The film, which grossed $954 million at the box office, took the award for best drama film, while Cillian Murphy, who played the eponymous lead, was named best actor. In addition, Christopher Nolan was named best director, while Robert Downey Jr, who played US government official Lewis Strauss, took the best supporting actor gong. Oppenheimer also won the award for best score.
Meanwhile, Barbie, which went up against Oppenheimer at the box office and also had multiple nominations, only took home the new box office achievement award, for taking $1.4 billion worldwide.
Elsewhere at the Golden Globes, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things and The Holdovers took two awards each. Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone, who starred in Poor Things, made history as she took the award for best drama actress, as the first indigenous person to win such an award – she comes from a Blackfeet Indian Reservation in northern Montana.
In the TV categories, Succession led the way, scooping several of the top awards, including being named best drama series.
Succession, which followed the story of a media baron and his children and their struggle for control of the business ended last year after its fourth season. Kieran Culkin, who starred as Roman Roy, took the best leading TV actor award, following in the footsteps of co-stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. Sarah Snook took the best leading TV actress gong, while Matthew MacFadyen was named as best supporting actor.
