He’s currently starring on the big screen in Gladiator II.

But Paul Mescal will try his hand at something slightly different next month.

The Irish actor, 28, is set to host the skit show, Saturday Night Live.

Taking to the floor on December 7, the appearance will be Mescal’s first on the show.

The Normal People star will be joined by singer-songwriter and producer Shaboozey, who will also be making his debut.

Mescal’s appearance will be the first following a three-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Mescal follows in the footsteps of recent stars to take on the role of host, including Charli XCX, Ariana Grande and Bill Burr.

The actor will be added to the list of Irish stars to present the show – inlcuding Pierce Brosnan, Colin Farrell and Saoirse Ronan.

Mescal loses quiz – about his own life

Elsewhere this week, Mescal took part in a very unusual quiz – about his own life.

The actor went head-to-head with his “biggest fan” – a woman called Larissa who runs the Instagram fan acount, @paulmescalpics.

Sitting down to answer basic biographical questions about his life, the competition got off to a good start for Mescal. “I love how I am celebrating the fact that I am just knowing the answers about my life,” he joked.

But things went a downhill for Mescal when he slipped up on a few easy points.

Swooping in to answer when he graduated from drama school, Mescal gave the answer as 2015. But Larissa ended up taking a punt at 2017 – and got the answer right.

“I got my own life wrong there,” Mescal said. “I lost that comfortably.”

Turning to Larissa, Mescal, with sincerity, said that even though he hates losing, “I lost to a better Paul.”

Sharing the video with her 175k Instagram followers, Larissa wrote,“I played a little game of ‘Who Knows Paul Best?’ With Paul Mescal and I actually won.”
