Pep Guardiola is in the midst of his worst ever run as a manager. And today things got even worse for the Manchester City boss. His Premier League champions lost their fourth consecutive league game in a row, leaving them without a win in seven in all competitions.

The latest chapter in City’s startling loss of form – which now sees them lying in fifth place in the Premier League, 11 points off top spot – saw the champions endure a thumping defeat against leaders Liverpool. While the 2-0 scoreline doesn’t suggest a thrashing, City are probably wondering how Arne Slot’s table topping Reds didn’t reach double figures in the first-half alone, such was their dominance.

And while City’s impotent display was perhaps best typified on the pitch by the anonymous Erling Haaland, on the sidelines, Guardiola was doing himself no favours by getting visibly rattled by the chants from the Anfield faithful.

As Liverpool’s home crowd rained down choruses of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” the Catalan manager turned round with six fingers raised, in an attempt to dampen the chants with a reference to how many Premier League titles he’s won with City since taking over as manager in 2016.

Instead, most non-City fans just saw the response as an act of desperation. Some fans willingly misinterpreted it for their own amusement.

City have struggled ever since Ballon d’Or winning midfielder Rodri was ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, suffered in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, in September. But even so, despite losing an imperious midfielder of the Spaniard’s calibre, Guardiola’s squad is still packed with enough strength in depth to overcome the challenges they’ve faced over this past month. Will Pep be eyeing up an emergency January deal to bolster the ranks and overcome Liverpool’s 11 point lead atop the Premier League table? Will the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager be able to perform a minor miracle and be able to show seven fingers to the Kop, next season?
