Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has shared a touching tribute to the late Pope Francis. 

The Once Upon A Time in Hollywood actor called his meeting with the late Head of the Catholic Church “deeply moving” in the caption to an Instagram post.

News of the Pope’s death was confirmed on Easter Monday 21 April 2025. He was 88-years-old. It was later confirmed that his cause of death was a stroke and heart failure.

Soon afterwards, tributes began to pour in with various people remembering the late religious icon. DiCaprio is one of the latest names added to this list of celebrities paying tribute.

Taking to Instagram, the star shared a carousel of two images of himself alongside Pope Francis. The pair met briefly in 2016 when DiCaprio was working on his climate change documentary Before The Flood.

What did Leonardo DiCaprio say about Pope Francis?

In the caption accompanying his images, DiCaprio called Called Pope Francis a “transformational leader” and someone who “demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Elsewhere, he reiterated that his meeting with the Pope was “deeply moving.”

“Pope Francis was a transformational leader — not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism,” DiCaprio said in the caption accompanying his pictures. 

“He demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, most notably through his groundbreaking 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. This powerful document served as a clarion call for a fundamental shift in how we relate to the planet. 

“Emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life, Pope Francis urged individuals, communities, institutions, and world leaders to unite in caring for our common home. His words helped catalyze momentum ahead of the global 2015 COP21 conference, ultimately contributing to the formation of the Paris Agreement.

He continues, adding “During the filming of my documentary Before the Flood in 2016, I had the honor of sitting down with Pope Francis for a conversation on the urgent need to address climate change. That experience was enlightening, deeply moving and thought provoking.”

The star concluded by calling Pope Francis “one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time. 

“His legacy will continue to inspire generations of environmentalists around the world,” he added. “May he rest in peace.”
