Jane Austen fans, rejoice – as Pride and Prejudice is being given a new series.

The novel, published in 1813 by the British author, has been adapted many times for the stage and screen.

The most famous versions include a 1995 miniseries, starring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy (a role he would then parallel in the Bridget Jones movies).

A decade later, the role was played by Succession star Matthew Macfadyen, while Keira Knightley co-starred as Elizabeth Bennet.

But when will the new adaptation be available to watch, and who will be our Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet this time? Here’s everything we know.

When will Pride and Prejudice be released?

Filming for Pride and Prejudice will kick off in the UK later this year, and it appears likely to premiere in 2026.

The series will consist of six episodes, which fans will be able to watch on Netflix.

Fans will be pleased to hear that Emma Corrin will play the strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet.

The actor – who shot to fame as Princess Diana in The Crown, and has recently starred in Black Mirror – will be joined by Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Benediction) as Mr Darcy.

Speaking about the project, Corrin, who is also an executive producer, said, “Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honour.

“I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

Other huge names are also involved, as Olivia Colman – who won an Oscar for her role in The Favorite – has been confirmed to play Mrs Bennet.

Who has written the new Pride and Prejudice series?

Also serving as an executive producer on the, writer Dolly Alderton has been tasked with bringing Austen’s book to life.

An accomplished journalist and author in her own right, Alderton has penned best-selling novels including Ghosts and Good Material.

She’s also no stranger to transforming a novel for the screen – as she turned her debut memoir, Everything I Know About Love, into a BBC series.

“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton said in a statement. “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.

“With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”

Fans may also be interested to find out that Alderton is particularly well placed to adapt a romance novel – as she began her career as a dating columnist.

For those who have no idea what Pride and Prejudice is about (where have you been!), you’re in for a treat.

The Regency-era story revolves around Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet, an unmarried young woman and the second of five daughters, whose mother is desperate to see her paired off.

While on the (rather chaste) dating scene, Elizabeth meets the rude Mr Darcy, who appears to be totally uninterested in Elizabeth – until he’s not.

Netflix says the series “will be a faithful, classic adaptation of the novel” – which is sure to delight its most diehard fans.

Is there a trailer for the new series of Pride and Prejudice?

There is currently no trailer available for the Pride and Prejudice series – but we’ll be sure to update this section when there is!
