Another web in the Spider-Verse is to be created as MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video have ordered a live-action series of Spider-Man Noir, with Nicholas Cage to star in it.

Cage has previously played the Noir version of Spidey in the hugely successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated film. It was previously reported that Cage was in talks to take on the role, but now it has been confirmed.

Surprisingly, this will be the first regular TV role in Cage’s long career. He has appeared in many movies over the past 40 years, including ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, ‘Face/off’ and ‘Ghost Rider’.

First live-action appearance

The announcement of the series – which will be the first time Spider-Man Noir will be seen in live action – came ahead of Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers.

The series is being developed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who produced the Spider-Verse films, along with Amy Pascal. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot are also on board as co-showrunners and executive producers.

Meanwhile, Tom Holland has issued an update on whether there will be a Spider-Man 4 film, and Nicholas Cage is in talks about his role in the Spider-Man Noir series.

Down on his luck

The outline for the series runs as that Noir will focus on an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who has to grapple with his past as the city’s one and only superhero.

Spider-Man Noir is part of Marvel’s Noir universe (Earth-90214), which reinterprets familiar characters in a hardboiled/crime noir atmosphere – a genre first popularised by authors such as Raymond Chandler in the 1930 and 40s. Spider-Man Noir first appeared in comics in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir line. In recent appearances, he has more closely resembled his look in the Spider-Verse films.

Amazon also confirms a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video.
