The story of Quentin Tarantino’s proposed film The Movie Critic is a rather knotty one.
Tarantino previously said it would be his tenth and final film. However, that looks not to be the case for the moment.
In April 2024, reports emerged suggesting that Tarantino had shelved plans for the film. He supposedly “had a change of heart” and was “going back to the drawing board to figure out what that final movie will be”.
But what was the film meant to be about? And will it ever get made?
What was The Movie Critic meant to be about?
Initially, the project focused on a film writer working for a fictional porn magazine in the late 1970s. In Tarantino’s words, its protagonist “really lived but was never really famous”.
Some sources suggested to The Hollywood Reporter that he was contemplating adding some meta elements to the film. This could involve stars of his earlier work to reprise their iconic characters in a nod to his previous films.
Who could have starred in it?
Some of the names rumoured for the film included John Travolta, Jamie Foxx and Margot Robbie. Meanwhile, Brad Pitt was reportedly in talks to reprise his character of Cliff Booth – first seen in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There was even speculation that Tom Cruise could be brought aboard.
When might Tarantino make The Movie Critic?
The legendary director gave an update on the project in conversation with film critic Elvis Mitchell in Utah. There, he said that he was “in no hurry to jump into production”.
“I have been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns five, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter,” he said. “When I am in America, I am writing. When I am in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father.
“The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6. That way he will know what’s going on, he’ll be there and it will be a memory for the rest of his life. My daughter is already such a genius, she’ll just get it.”
What else is Tarantino working on?
Tarantino revealed he was working on a play, which will “probably the next thing I end up doing”.
“If it’s a fiasco I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie.”
