They’re two of the acting world’s most exciting new talents.

And now fans have gone wild as Rachel Zegler has hinted she will star in a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, alongside British actor Kit Connor.

The West Side Story actor, 22, delighted her 2.2 million Instagram followers when she shared a ‘J’ to her grid. Connor – who shot to fame for his role in Netflix’s hit teen drama, Heartstopper – posted an ‘R’, which also contained an interlocking half of an addition sign to match Zegler’s.

If that wasn’t enough of a hint, both actors tagged themselves in at the location ‘Verona’, and added a heart and dagger emoji as the caption.

When internet sleuths had pieced the information together, the comments section went crazy.

“Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler as Romeo and Juliet are u actually serious omg,” wrote one fan in disbelief. Another added, “OMG!! Is she doing Romeo &Juliet on Broadway or a movie? Whatever this turns out to be, I’m so ready for it!”

“It really is ur world and we’re just living in it,” a third continued.

Others paid reference to Zegler’s breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 movie West Side Story, in which she played Maria. Fans of the musical will know that it is based on the Shakespearean tragedy, where two members of rival gangs – the Jets and the Sharks – fall in love, and their world crumbles as their friends go head to head.

“Rachel playing Juliet and Maria is so ridiculously iconic,” praised one fan.

As of yet, it’s unknown whether the project will be for the stage or screen – but fans seem to think that Zegler and Connor are set to take Broadway by storm.

The news comes just after it was announced Marvel actor Tom Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers will star in the lead roles, in a version to play on London’s West End at the Duke of York’s Theatre, which opens next month (May 11).
